Mayor of Ramsgate / Alderman Thomas Henry Prestedge
Years Elected: 1928
History:
Served as a member of the town council for over 36 years-inc; time
served as a councillor, alderman and Mayor. Also a member of K.C.C.
Given the Freedom of the Borough on October 25th 1945.
In 1909 won seat on council as a representative of Sir Moses Montefiore
ward (after 2 previously unsuccessful attempts.)
At service when made freeman, tributes were many, Alderman Twigger
said of him;
"Tom's life has been full of trying to do good for somebody."
1928 gained a seat on K.C.C. for Ramsgate East.
Notable Achievements;
1. Pushed forward allotments scheme, and tried to ensure that council
employees has a fair deal.
2. With help of Mr. C. Nixon helped to establish good housing estates.
3. Invested in work of health committee with particular emphasis on the
maternity side.
4. Took up case for mentally deficient and old people.
5. Lots of poverty when elected Mayor in 1928, so formed Mayor's
distress fund.
6. Chairman of Local Blind Committee.
7. His peers remarked on his stamina and endurance and his own wish to
help all people of the Borough to provide better services, health and
housing.
8. President of Ramsgate Liberal Club c1918 (from Isle of Thanet
Gazette 1st April 1949.)
Reported death of Mr. T.H. Prestedge. 63 South Eastern Road (died at
home age 80.)
1919 was president of the Isle of Thanet Divisional Labour Party.

Associated with the following Societies;
Hearth of Oak Friendly Society.
Ramsgate Education Committee.
Ramsgate Employment Committee.
Member of Old Borough Fire Brigade in his youth - also a keen cricketer.
A master plumber although retired from business.
Funeral held at St. Lawrence on 31st March 1949.
Left a widow and two sons.
