Ramsgate Chess Club is a friendly group of chess enthusiasts who compete against each other, as well as other teams in the Thanet and East Kent Chess League. The club is open every Tuesday and Wednesday at the Red Lion Pub in Ramsgate.

It also welcomes those who would like to play, or learn to play 'non-competitively'.
  • 6:30pm - Adult beginners (ROOKies) and non-competitive matches.
  • 7:30pm - Club members (ROOKS)

Interest in chess has exploded globally over the past few years. A combination of Covid lockdowns, ‘The Queen's Gambit’ series, Chess Youtubers and the www.chess.com platform has transformed the game into an e-sport. (There are over 3 million games played each day on www.chess.com alone).

This is also a good thing for traditional chess clubs. It has encouraged more enthusiasts to seek out local clubs to experience 'over the board' matches and enjoy a combination of friendly banter and traditional formality.

Ramsgate Chess Club welcomes those who have only played online. Games are often informal with feedback from club members and an introduction to chess clocks and the recording of moves. The best part of the club experience is a great evening out, socialising with fellow enthusiasts, and taking advantage of a nice selection of 'refreshments' being served from the bar downstairs.

If you have ever played or wanted to play chess, Ramsgate Chess Club sounds like a good idea!
