14 February 2023

2023 marks a major milestone for East Kent Mencap as it celebrates 75 years of supporting people with learning disabilities. The charity has a year-long campaign of activities and fundraising events planned to continue the organisation’s work to offer choice, support, and opportunity to its members.

The anniversary will officially be launched in April 2023 by Jason Gerlack, CEO of East Kent Mencap. It will include special events in each of the charity Community Activity Hubs and a 75-themed fundraising campaign appeal. The anniversary will be an opportunity for the non-profit organisation to thank the dedicated volunteers and staff for their passion, commitment and hard work. Celebrating its members’ achievements will be a key part of the anniversary plans, together with creating more opportunities to support them in 2023 and beyond.

Established in 1948 by three Broadstairs parents of children with learning disabilities, East Kent Mencap now employs over 120 staff and supports over 400 adults and children with a learning disability. The organisation provides services in Thanet, Canterbury, Herne Bay, Ashford, and Swale, with Community Activity Hubs, housing, supported living, clubs and activities.

CEO, Jason Gerlack, said:I am very proud of what East Kent Mencap has achieved in the last 75 years with our incredible members, supporters, volunteers, staff, funders and partners. Working together we have made a positive difference to people with learning disabilities to help them achieve what they want out of life. In 2023 we will celebrate these achievements and lay the foundations for the next 75 years.

Fundraising Manager, Jane Brooke, added:We have a series of special events and campaigns planned to ensure 2023 is a landmark year for East Kent Mencap. Our local community is very important to us and we couldn’t do it without their generosity and support. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them and encourage everyone to get involved and support our 75th anniversary.
