Key Updates - Planning and Infrastructure Committee Meeting

Home / About Ramsgate / News / Key Updates - Planning and Infrastructure Committee Meeting

14 April 2022

The committee considered 11 planning applications. Of which, the following may be of particular interest to residents:

PA/TH/22/0132 – Berth 4 And 5, Port Of Ramsgate, Royal Harbour Approach, CT11 9FT
Application for prior approval for the installation of a 119m long berth following the removal of existing berth 4/5 under Part 18 Class A of Town Country Planning (General Permitted Development) Order 2015.
RESOLUTION: As per the Council’s previous resolution on the matter:
  1. In the light of the substantial amount of local concern; the amount of money being spent; and that TDC is the applicant and decision maker, RTC recommends that a full planning application is submitted.
  2. A document of questions provided by Cllr R Wing to be sent to TDC with RTC’s comments.
  3. RTC, due to the public perception of the role of TDC in this matter recommends that TDC seeks another authority to consider the application.
  4. Additionally,
  5. The Council is concerned about noise pollution for the neighbouring properties.
  6. The Council is unclear as to why the conveyor belt is referenced in this application, when this matter requires a separate planning application.
Residents can comment on this application until the 24th April 2022 (via TDC’s website).

The Committee considered a number of applications in the town centre where it was felt that over-development would be a repercussion of the different proposals (a House of Multiple Occupancy application, several applications to divide existing properties into flats), and on various applications the Committee raised concerns about the proposed room sizes and insufficient bin storage that would lead to waste management problems.

The Committee also considered a response to Kent County Council’s Tree Establishment Strategy 2022-2032 Public Consultation and the following comments will be raised:
  1. The Strategy doesn’t address the deficiency of trees in East Kent, particularly Thanet.
  2. The Strategy should include policy to strengthen the district council’s protection of trees, and replacement with suitably mature trees.
  3. The provision of urban trees should be improved.
  4. The Strategy doesn’t address the declining number of trees.
  5. KCC needs to suitably maintain and replace trees (when necessary) near to highways.
  6. The provision of hedgerows should be included in the Strategy.
This consultation is open until 2nd May 2022 and residents are also invited to respond, the details can be found at https://letstalk.kent.gov.uk/plantree.

This is not a summary of everything covered at this meeting, please see the official Minutes for the legal record of the meeting. The meeting can also be watched on our YouTube channel.

The above is intended to provide a snapshot of matters that may be of particular interest to residents.

It is also noted that although the town council is a statutory consultee on planning matters, it is Thanet District Council that has the decision making powers.
