Key Updates - Extraordinary Council Meeting

Home / About Ramsgate / News / Key Updates - Extraordinary Council Meeting

24 February 2022

This extraordinary meeting had been arranged to transact two items of business that were time sensitive.
  • The Council resolved to respond to Thanet’s District Council’s “Thanet Outdoor Market Operator Services – Public Information Notice”. This was a soft market testing exercise in which TDC were asking for expressions of interest from potential managers interested in running a monthly market in Ramsgate. The Town Council is very keen to see a weekly market return to Ramsgate, and our expression of interest states that the town council would like to manage a weekly market in the town centre, and a monthly market (that could be for specialities) at a different location (near the town centre).

  • Various activities relating to the Platinum Jubilee were considered, and the following was resolved:
    • The Council will take part in the “The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacons’ event on Thursday 2nd June 2022; it is intended that there will be beacons at the East Cliff, Harbour and West Cliff. Details about this event will be published nearer the time.

    • The Council seeks to acquire a plot of land in or adjacent to Ramsgate’s boundaries, in order to establish a “Jubilee Wood”. Such a woodland would be an eternal reminder of Her Majesty’s service, play a vital role in talking the climate emergency, protect the land from development and provide an area for leisure, relaxation and environmentally friendly activities.

    • It was resolved not to allocate £15,000 from the events budget for the “Royal Harbour Festival of Ramsgate”. The Council will instead consider how to support Jubilee events across the wards, with a smaller budget for Harbour/Centre activities.

This is not a summary of everything covered at this meeting, please see the official Minutes for the legal record of the meeting. You can also watch the entire discussion on our YouTube Channel. The above is intended to provide a snapshot of matters that may be of particular interest to residents.
