Active Ramsgate New 18.04.2018
As many of you will know, Active Ramsgate is the award-winning initiative of Ramsgate Town Council that develops and promotes Ramsgate as a tourist destination focusing on an exciting and ever-growing range of outdoor leisure activities.

The initiative was launched in 2013 and has grown over the years to such an extent that it is now bringing approximately £250,000 each year into the town in ADDITIONAL tourism income.

This year, due to the global pandemic, it’s been an extremely challenging time for our tourism businesses. Active Ramsgate has remained resolute throughout and as soon as the lockdown measures safely allowed it, released its new promotional leaflet for the town. This is being distributed widely both online and in leaflet outlets throughout Kent, London and Essex to encourage tourism visits to Ramsgate.

For the past two years, Active Ramsgate has hosted the British Freestyle Kitesurfing Championships off Ramsgate Main Sands. This attracts over 50 of the UK’s top kitesurfers to compete to be crowned British Champion. Ramsgate Town Council’s aim through hosting and sponsoring these championships has been to position Ramsgate as one of the UK’s top kitesurfing destinations, an accolade that means that kitesurfers from all across the country now visit Ramsgate to pursue their sport. Importantly for the town, this growing new visitor market is increasingly spending time and money in Ramsgate’s bars, restaurants, cafes and accommodation.

The kitesurfing championships were sadly cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, but the reputation that Active Ramsgate has built up has meant that the kitesurfing tourism is rocketing in the area, as evidenced by the growth of Ramsgate’s local Kitesurfing school Kite Pirates. At a time when we have had to work hard to encourage visitors back to our shores, this has certainly been one of this season’s success stories.

Active Ramsgate has also, during this season, capitalised on one of the hottest trends in the outdoor leisure market, Stand Up Paddleboarding. With a huge array of media articles and broadcast features being pumped out about the growing popularity of this activity during lockdown, Active Ramsgate is proud to boast of its collaboration with the only paddleboarding school in Thanet accredited by the British Stand Up Paddleboard Association, Kite Pirates. Kite Pirates has developed paddleboard lessons, small group guided paddles and paddleboard hire options in Ramsgate, and the level of demand has been unprecedented. Anticipating this trend, Active Ramsgate has worked extremely hard over the past few months to promote visits to Ramsgate to try it out.

What’s unique about Active Ramsgate is that on the back of promoting the town’s wealth of outdoor activities, we use this opportunity to underpin the promotion of the wider tourism offering in the destination to potential visitors. Teaming up with Visit Kent, Visit Ramsgate and local tourism businesses, over the past few months we have focused our efforts on the staycation market, promoting COVID-19 secure getaways in Ramsgate to the UK holiday market. This has seen us organising press trips for journalists from leading regional publications in Surrey, Sussex, London and surrounding regions to promote our wonderful town to their readers. We should see the results of this work over the coming months.

Our mission remains to encourage new visitors into the town so that local businesses benefit, which is why the Active Ramsgate team has been working harder than ever to ensure that Ramsgate is front of mind for visitors when planning a staycation in these strange times.

You will see many developments from Ramsgate Town Council through the Active Ramsgate initiative over the next few months, including an updated web presence, increased social media activity and a range of PR initiatives - all geared to bringing visitors into the town to experience Ramsgate as an active destination.

We hope you will join us and support Active Ramsgate’s activities for the benefit of all. For local tourism businesses that would like to know more, please do get in contact with us at
