A Message from the Mayor of Ramsgate

19 December 2020

Mayor Book 19.10.2020
Throughout the pandemic, the community spirit of Ramsgate has been remarkable. Volunteering within the community along with donations of food to the food bank continues to support many vulnerable people throughout this crisis.

As your TDC Councillor, I was able to assist residents with housing, working with TDC officers. I have also been dealing with several cases with regards to refuse removal and maintenance. As usual I continue to be available to give residents advice and support.

Despite the limitations imposed by COVID-19, Ramsgate had a good summer. We were fortunate with the weather and saw many visitors come to Ramsgate, which was extremely beneficial to our local businesses. As your Mayor, I attended the VJ (Victory in Japan) Day celebration and Battle of Britain Day. With many festivals being cancelled I was delighted that our own Festival of Sound was able to go ahead and it was a great success.

Two books about Ramsgate have recently been published: "The Royal Harbour of Ramsgate" and "Ramsgate, the Town and its Seaside Heritage". A copy of the latter was presented to me by Historic England, which I shall treasure.

With the tourist season slowing down, and the winter weather fast approaching, we are once again facing the old issues of how to maintain trade in our high streets. Now more than ever supporting local businesses along with public safety is a top priority. Several new businesses have opened in town, which will give local shoppers more choice and I hope you will consider shopping locally to support them. A massive thank you to Ramsgate Town Council and the Technicians for their hard work in keeping our town attractive.

As we are still in danger of spreading the Coronavirus, we must take responsibility for both our own safety, and that of others. Ramsgate’s festive season will be very different this year, but it is my hope that we will adapt to the changing circumstances with innovation and resilience.

I hope my message finds you safe and well, and I look forward to my next update.
