A gentle breeze flows through your hair as you explore our beautiful coastline. Endorphins are running high and you’re feeling good. Why? Because you’ve just done some running! You’ve just put one foot in front of the other without even realising it and managed to go a long way! How far? 3k? 5k? or 5 miles? It really doesn’t matter because it feels so great!
Doesn't it sound wonderful? Well you don't need to imagine it. The opportunity is right here on your doorstep. We can't always guarantee the sunshine, or that it won't rain, but we will try our very best to make you smile whilst achieving and surpassing your fitness goals.
Coastal Striders have been on the scene and getting their vitamin "sea" since 2017. A vision from club president Simon Ballard who saw that a free running club should be available for all. No fees, no ties, no pressure. And here we are today, a completely free, UK affiliated running club based in Ramsgate, going from strength to strength.
Simon and his team of committee members saw how important running is for physical and mental health and through our 12 strong team of qualified run leaders, we can help you get out of the door and running on any of our multiple sessions available each week. If you are a complete beginner, or a run walker, a runner who's lost their mojo, or someone who wants to improve their speed, Coastal Striders can cater for you. Lots of our runners have never run before joining us and have since completed multiple marathons. Running doesn't come naturally to a lot of us, but we all have to start somewhere!
We run from two locations, the Granville theatre and from the boating pool and each run is guaranteed to pass through the wonderful sights of Ramsgate. Our Royal Harbour, the beach, the promenades, the Chine and much more - you'll discover places you never knew existed! How lucky are we?
Studies have shown that the physical benefits of running are plentiful. It can help prevent type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, strokes and a host of other conditions. It can greatly improve cardiovascular health and build strength. Running is also one of the best forms of exercise for losing or maintaining a consistent weight. All this from just being out in the fresh air, and not cooped up in a stuffy, expensive gym.
Equally as important are the mental and emotional benefits. Running can help improve your mood, boost your confidence and has the power to eliminate depression. With this in mind, Coastal Striders appointed two Mental Health Champions who are supported by Mind (the mental health charity). Our club's aim is to improve mental health wellbeing through running, remove the stigma and get people talking. Emma and Jo, our wonderful champions, regularly arrange run and talk sessions whereby if people want to discuss their feelings, or just simply chat whilst enjoying the company of other like-minded people, they can.
So here at Coastal Striders we believe that running is incredibly beneficial to the mind, body and soul. If this is all sounding very tempting, why not give us a try? What have you got to lose?
