Getting Active on the water in Ramsgate

We’re so blessed with beautiful golden sands and the clear, crisp sea in Ramsgate.

It’s great for paddling and swimming, but there is so much more that we can use the water for – and now that we’re heading into the summer months, what better way to be out in the sunshine and make the most of the natural assets that we have on our doorstep?

Have you ever considered, for example, exploring the area via kayak?

Active Ramsgate, which encourages visitors to the area through the promotion of outdoor activities, developed two canoe trails, which gives visitors and residents a unique perspective on our coastline.

The first route is a guided trail – which allows participants to explore the open sea and river – a two to three hour route right through the wonderful Pegwell Bay Nature Reserve. Getting up close and personal with the wetland birds and seals that can be found in this area by paddling a kayak through the water – who can say they’ve tried that?

This trail is run by Canoe Wild, Active Ramsgate’s responsible canoe operator, and they will also provide all the equipment you need – so what’s stopping you?

And for the more experienced canoeist, why not check out the self-guided route from Ramsgate to Broadstairs following the coastline through the open sea? Setting off from the slipway on the beach for two miles to Broadstairs – you can then either paddle back or get picked up.

Of course, we couldn’t write an article about getting active on the water without mentioning kitesurfing.

Active Ramsgate is delighted to once again, bring the final of the British Freestyle Kitesurfing Championships to Ramsgate, taking place on the weekend of the August bank holiday, August 29 and 30. (To be decided)

But rather than just watching the beautiful array of colours and kites out on the water, you too can be at one with the wind and the water – it’s an exhilarating experience and we are lucky to have a perfect location to do just that. Kite Pirates Kite School is based in Ramsgate, and the team run training sessions from the beach. We guarantee that if you try it once, you’ll be hooked!

If you’re not brave enough to try kitesurfing, how about just trying paddle boarding? Kite Pirates will also be running tours and paddleboard hire throughout the summer, an easy way to get out on the sea and enjoy the feeling of the wind through your hair.

Sound tempting? Here’s what you need to know. For the canoeing trails and to contact Canoe Wild, simply visit the kayaking section on the Active Ramsgate website: www.ramsgatetown.org/activeramsgate/canoeing-kent-coast

For kitesurfing and paddle boarding, visit www.ramsgatetown.org/activeramsgate/watersports to get in touch with Kite Pirates for details of their training sessions and hire.

And don’t forget to tell us about your experiences. We’d love to see your pictures. Simply tag Ramsgate Town and Visit Ramsgate into your social media posts and use #ActiveRamsgate.
