Town Promoter Santa
It is that time of year where our town is filled with brightly coloured lights celebrating the festive season. Starting with the Christmas Lights Switch On event which this year, being traditionally held on the last Sunday of November, will be on November 24. The town will have nearly an extra week of Christmas build up! This first part of Ramsgate’s celebrations is funded by Ramsgate Town Council and organised by the Ramsgate Town Team who, work with other community groups, put on a family friendly afternoon of activities, workshops, entertainment, and of course, the real Santa will visit and spend time with all the lucky children who queue patiently to get their few minutes with the big man himself.

The Winter Lantern Parade will be on December 1 this year, coinciding with the fabulous boat owners, who will start to light up their boats for the entire month of December. Workshops for the parade will be running throughout November and if you want to get involved, pop into Arts in Ramsgate, 18 Harbour Street or give them a call on 01843 309284 to find out more. The parade will start at 4:30pm outside Argos, so even if you are not involved, do come down and cheer them on.

The boatowners in our harbour make a special effort to delight the community and beyond by putting on their own ‘Festival of Lights’, which creates such a wonderful atmosphere at the harbour. They do this for the love of our town and also to raise money for a charity close to their hearts, the RNLI. If you see a donation bucket in one of the bars or restaurants, do pop some change in or visit the RNLI shop at The Custom House, Harbour Parade to show your appreciation. Our local independent businesses also club together and pledge donations to the Ramsgate RNLI ‘per lit boat’ and last year raised just over £800 to show their appreciation for the volunteer boatowners who spend hours making their boats look spectacular!

When you come down to enjoy the harbour lights, do pop into the town centre where you will find a growing number of independent shops filled with unique gifts for your friends and family. The special late night shopping event will be on Thursday December 5, where extra goodies and special offers are exclusively available and every customer receives a free raffle ticket with the first prize of £50 to spend in any of the participating shops. A typical gesture from our lovely independent shops, so do come down and support them! Archive Homestore will also be hosting their popular Maker’s Market on Thursday December 12 untill 9pm, which is bound to bring out the festive spirit!

Ramsgate is special all year round, but I think in December it surpasses itself, and demonstrates to the community and beyond that working together and supporting each other means we do not just survive; we thrive even in these difficult economic times!

Love local, shop local and have a wonderful Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!
