Kitesurfer Active
The 2019 British Freestyle Kitesurfing Championships took place on August 24 and 25, sponsored by Active Ramsgate, an initiative by Ramsgate Town Council, with almost 50 competitors taking part to secure their slot as national champion in seven categories. With temperatures soaring as high as the kites, Ramsgate was in for a real treat.

There was an incredible amount to see and do - with music and stalls along the beach raising awareness of local Active Ramsgate businesses, sea and land support services such as the Sea Cadets and Thanet Lifeguard Club and selling goods such as surfwear, there was plenty to keep the whole family entertained.

132 adults and children took part in free kitesurfing taster sessions on the beach, and with paddleboards for hire, there was plenty of activity on the sea too.

Professional kitesurfing champion Tom Court was keeping everyone informed of the action on the water, and when there wasn't enough wind for competing to take place, paddleboarding, foiling and other competitions were taking place, keeping the excitement buzzing throughout the whole weekend.

We were delighted when Kent siblings, 17 year old Francesca and 14 year old Mattia Maini from Herne Bay came 1st in the Amateur Women category and 2nd in the Junior Boys Category respectively. Keep an eye out for them in the future, we've got our fingers crossed for them to be included in Team GB in the 2024 Paris Olympics when kitesurfing makes its debut.

We had plenty of media interest before, during and after the competition with TV, radio and print outlets all coming along and interviewing participants as well as our very own Dr Cheryl Mvula from Active Ramsgate.

We're so proud of Ramsgate as a top kitesurfing destination that we can't help but shout about it, and we're hoping the British Championships will return again next year.

But if you can't wait that long, then get in touch with our local kite school Kite Pirates to book a lesson and give it a go yourself! Call 07739 369531 for more details.
