So winter is upon us! We can pretty much guarantee beautiful sunrises over the sea and sunsets over the harbour, which are always a great draw for photographers and sun worshippers alike. However, this winter, Ramsgate Town Council is putting on something rather special. Working with Definitive Special Projects Ltd, the laser display company who produced the laser show for ‘Christmas at Kew’ and ‘We Will Rock You’ musical, this will be a first for Ramsgate; ‘The Northern Lights’ laser show.
From December 8 - 16, the laser show will start at 4pm and finish around 10pm, which means Ramsgate will have its very own ‘Aurora Borealis’ every night for 9 nights! The best views of the display will be from Ramsgate Town Centre and Harbour, so make sure you pop down to witness it.
To celebrate the ‘Northern Lights’ coming to Ramsgate, there will be a community lantern parade on the first night which will start at 4pm from Harbour Street, everyone is welcome. Schoolchildren and families are invited to come to Arts in Ramsgate, 18 Harbour Street, and make a ‘shooting star’ lantern to carry in the parade so look out for the flyer in schoolbags.
With the ‘Northern Lights’ and our fabulous boat owners lighting up throughout December, the Town and Harbour are going to be a sight to behold! Our boat owners light up their boats for the love of the town and also raise money for RNLI in the process, so if you come down and enjoy the sparkling views, look out for donation buckets as all proceeds go directly to RNLI Ramsgate.
The Christmas Lights Switch On event will be on Sunday November 25. This is funded by Ramsgate Town Council and organised by the Ramsgate Town Team. Other voluntary groups support the event including Ramsgate Arts, Addington Street Community Group, Arts in Ramsgate and the Miss Ramsgate Court. This is a great example of volunteers working together to produce a wonderful event. This year, Ramsgate Town Council has gone all out and is busy installing extra light displays around the town and hopefully lots of our lovely independent shops will join in as well.
We will be having a late-night shopping event as usual and although the date isn’t confirmed yet, it will probably be on Thursday December 13, giving people the opportunity to enjoy the laser show, lit boats and the festive cheer brought to you by many of our independent businesses!
As many of you will remember, last year’s New Year’s Eve Fireworks had to be cancelled due to the high winds that were forecast. So this year we are going to trial a laser display instead. Working with the same laser company, we will be putting on a ‘fireworkesque’ type display at midnight for your delight. Hope you like it!
I hope you enjoy what Ramsgate has to offer this winter and I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy, New Year!
