/ Ramsgate secures its place as one of the UK's top kitesurfing destinations
August is a busy month in Ramsgate and brings with it one of the hottest events in the kitesurfing calendar – the final leg of the 2018 National Freestyle Kitesurfing Championships.
Ramsgate's reputation as a kitesurfing destination is set to be boosted by this prestigious event, and the team at Active Ramsgate (a Ramsgate Town Council initiative designed to promote Ramsgate through its outdoor activities) were thrilled to be approved for its suitability to host the event.
Of course, this isn't the first time that kitesurfing stars have come to town. In November 2016, kitesurfing champion Lewis Crathern broke the British record for the highest jump on Ramsgate Main Sands, and he has been firmly behind the decision to bring the Championships to Ramsgate:
"Ramsgate lends itself to a very strong wind from both the South and the North, kitesurfing works quite well off the beach, the waves can get really good. I went there for the strength of the winds, but also because it's a beautiful place, the big white cliffs make it an aesthetically pleasing place to ride. I like all the bars and shops on the seafront, it's always a nice visit to come down here, and I feel very welcome.
Andy Gratwick, Managing Director of the British Kitesports Association said:
“The Championships are growing, and we’re delighted to be taking it to a new venue this year. Ramsgate Sands is a perfect destination for kitesurfers and we want to encourage as many people to visit and try it out for themselves! It’s where records have been broken in the past, so we know we’re going to be in for a good competition!
So what's happening? On August 18 and 19 on Ramsgate Main Sands, around 70 competitors from all over the UK will be competing for the title of National Freestyle Kitesurfing Champion.
But don't worry, it's not just for the professionals, there will also be the chance to try it out for yourself, with free taster sessions happening on the beach, and plenty of other activities happening over the weekend, just head on down and join in!

Thousands of visitors are expected to the area as a result, not only for the event weekend, but also to visit as a kitesurfing destination. The weather conditions and beautiful sands make it a perfect spot for kitesurfers, and its popularity has grown rapidly in recent years. It’s hoped that many will return after the Championship to try out the sands for themselves.
The team at Active Ramsgate will be working hard to capitalise on this event, and they want local businesses to get involved to help them ride high on the wave of the kitesurfing championships (pardon the pun!). If you'd like to know more, then visit the Active Ramsgate website to get in touch.
