I hope the New Year has started well for everyone and you are looking forward to the sunnier weather, which is just around the corner. 2018 is a special year for Armistice Day and I know there are some exciting plans to commemorate the end of the Great War in 1918, including the wonderful Crafty Poppies volunteers who will be creating a spectacular installation at our waterfall this summer.
On the subject of volunteers, I have never lived anywhere with such a dedicated ‘taskforce’ and I wanted to use this space to thank some of the unsung heroes in our lovely town. From Chine to Chine we have gardening groups that help keep our public spaces looking inviting and colourful with regular weeding, sweeping and planting headed up by Maxine Morgan on the Westcliff and Clara Gibson on the Eastcliff. These guys and their stalwarts do a fantastic job on our behalf and work all year round for our benefit.
We have lots of charitable organisations too including the Friends of Ellington Park, the Carnival team, The Ramsgate Society, Ramsgate Tunnels, Ramsgate Arts and many more who all work behind the scenes, putting events on in the town and making Ramsgate a better place to live and visit. Ramsgate Town Team are also doing their bit and now have a litter picking group which you can read more about in this publication.
We have many community groups working with children and older people, from Scout clubs to the Probus club, offering activities for all ages. We also have our Arts in Ramsgate centre in Harbour Street that offers all things arty from traditional art classes to yoga, singing, crochet classes and lantern making. We hope to have several lantern parades this year so come and join in, they are open to everyone.
I know there are many more people, hundreds in fact, who work tirelessly to improve their neighbourhood and town and it doesn’t go unnoticed. If you want to generate more volunteers and promote your group, make sure Dean Williams at Ramsgate Town Council has your article so he can include it in the next edition of the Community Ad magazine.
If you would like to get involved or join in with any of the activities mentioned either as a volunteer or participant, you can find most of their contact details within this magazine but if you can’t find what you are looking for, feel free to email or phone me so I can point you in the right direction.
Here’s to 2018 in Ramsgate, let’s hope it is a fantastic year for us and a massive thank you to everyone that is determined to make our town the best it can be!
