Ellington Park ~ the perfect place for a picnic

Home / About Ramsgate / News / Ellington Park ~ the perfect place for a picnic

23 August 2025

The sun is out, the flowers are blooming and nothing beats a picnic with friends. Just 10 minutes’ walk from Ramsgate Train Station and Town Centre, Ellington Park is the perfect place to relax.

Spring brought the trees out in full blossom, with bluebells and wildflowers also on display.

The park was part of Thanet Urban Forest’s Cherry Blossom Tree Walk. As well as immersing themselves in the goodness of Spring, the walk was a chance for participants to learn a bit more about what makes the park so special.

With Summer now here, the area most benefitting from the good weather is the wildlife garden. Here, you can find a number of species of fauna and flora, with the pond encouraging a range of wildlife.

A walk through the park may just be what you need if you’re feeling down and there’s no better way to keep in the shade than a stroll under some of the beautiful trees.

Whether you’re looking to exercise, use the trim trail, practice yoga or simply find somewhere to relax in the sun, Ellington Park is a great choice.

You’ll not be alone in appreciating the space as the area has been awarded both Green Flag and Heritage Site awards three years in a row. At the time of writing we have had the inspection and are waiting to see if we have retained the Green Flag and Heritage Site awards for a fourth consecutive year. We would like to thank all of our dedicated volunteers and Thanet District Council's Open Spaces team for all of their help and support to keep the park looking so lovely. Here's hoping ...

If you’re looking to do something a bit more active, volunteering with the monthly gardening groups may be for you. Gardening sessions take place on the second Saturday of each month at 1pm. Meeting at the cafe, or you can join the Gardening Interest Group (GIG), every Wednesday 11am - 1pm to enjoy a cuppa, share tips and swap plants.

The cafe also recently became one of Ramsgate’s litter picking hubs (in partnership with CleanupUK), meaning you can do your bit and grab a drink after!

Be sure to look out for our upcoming events. We have our Wellness Day in August, which will offer advice and support on mental health and wellbeing. The park is part of the Heritage Open Days events, which will be presenting the history of the park on September 14. Later in the year, there will be costumed walks and Christmas events, so make sure to follow us on social media or check our website.

Regular park staples include the Second-hand Bookshop (open from April to October, on Wednesdays and Saturdays between 12noon - 4pm, weather permitting), Ellington Park Café (open Tuesday-Sunday 10am-4pm), Ramsgate & District Model Engineering Club (whose running times can be found at: www.radmec.co.uk) and the St Lawrence Bowls Club (which can be contacted on 01843 581023 or through their Facebook group).
