This year Paris will be hosting the 2024 Summer Olympics - a unique sporting event that only occurs every four years. The Community Team at Thanet District Council want to use this momentous sporting occasion to encourage Thanet residents to be more active through participation in sports and physical activities and to improve long-term health and well-being.
Working with partner agencies and sports clubs / organisations, the Community Team will be holding the Thanet Games across multiple locations in the district. This will consist of a series of events for children, adults and families which will provide an opportunity to try different sports and activities, compete in events to potentially be Thanet Games champions, and engage with clubs and organisations in the community,
Schools in the district will have the opportunity to enter teams and participate in the Children’s Games, held on the week commencing July 8, 2024. This will be an exciting opportunity for Thanet pupils to leave their school environment and go to sporting venues around the district, try out new sports and activities, compete in events and most importantly have fun!
For adults and families, the Adult Games will be held on the week commencing August 19, 2024. This will comprise five community events in the district, culminating in a grand closing ceremony at the Royal Harbour Academy with prize giving and music. These events will be fully inclusive, allowing everyone to participate regardless of gender, age and physical ability, and will be held at the following locations from 4pm - 8pm:
August 19 - Newington Park, Ringold Avenue, Ramsgate
August 20 - St. Peters Recreation Ground, Broadstairs
August 21 - Dane Park, Margate
August 22 - Westgate Recreation Ground, Westgate
August 23 - Royal Harbour Academy, (Upper School), Ramsgate (Closing Ceremony)
Sports clubs and organisations will be in attendance at all events, as will partner agencies, providing the opportunity to have a go at a new sport or activity, compete in competitive events and find out what the clubs and organisations offer. So come along, have a go, maybe sign up for a club membership, meet the Thanet Community Safety Partnership (TCSP) mascot, but most importantly, have fun and be part of the Thanet Games this summer!
