News / Consultation on closure of Richborough Waste & Recycling Centre
At the start of the summer if was announced that Richborough Waste & Recycling Centre was proposed to close as part of Kent County Council’s measures to save £55 million on its budget. A consultation was expected to launch in July 2023 with three county-wide options for closure – and Richborough was proposed to close in all three options.
Following tremendous negative feedback to these plans, at the Kent County Council Environment & Transport Cabinet Committee meeting on 5th July it was decided that the following options would be part of the consultation (two of which retain the Richborough site):
- Option 1: Closure of Faversham, Maidstone (Tovil), Dartford and Richborough
- Option 2: Closure of Faversham, Maidstone (Tovil), Dartford and Deal
- Option 3: Closure of Faversham, Maidstone (Tovil), Swanley and Deal
- Option 4: Closure of Faversham, Maidstone (Tovil), Swanley and Richborough
The full Minutes of this KCC meeting can be found at

KCC officers have now been tasked with considering the points raised by the KCC members at this meeting, and ensuring that the options are explained in sufficient detail.
In advance of the consultation launching, Ramsgate Town Council would like residents to be aware that we are opposed to any plans to close the Richborough site. Although in the Dover District, we’re aware that the Richborough site is a useful resource for residents. And without this site it will put an increased demand on the Margate Household Waste Recycling Centre, and potentially lead to increased fly tipping.
RTC will of course consider and respond to the KCC consultation when it commences in the prescribed way. And we will use all our media platforms to try to ensure that as many residents as possible know about the consultation and can respond.
There is also a “Save Richborough Household Waste Recycling Centre” Facebook page that residents may wish to join to keep up to date and communicate with other concerned local residents. NB. This Facebook page is neither run or affiliated with the town council.
