The ScrapStore on Meeting Street, Ramsgate, has reopened following a refresh and essential building work on the Foresters Hall listed building. The Mayor of Ramsgate, Councillor Patricia Moore, attended the grand reopening, which took place during the Great Big Green Week, which celebrates community action to tackle climate change.
GOLD Project Manager, Fiona Wonford, said: “We are thrilled to have reopened our doors to The ScrapStore. It was wonderful to see so many people from our local community, from crafters and artists to supporters of East Kent Mencap. Thank you to the Mayor of Ramsgate for officially reopening The ScrapStore.”
The ScrapStore is an important green initiative that encourages people in Ramsgate to reduce, reuse, and recycle by donating unwanted craft products that are then sold on to others to get creative.
Fiona shared: “We are passionate about protecting our planet and The ScrapStore is one small way we can actively make a difference to reduce, reuse and recycle, whilst getting creative at the same time!”
The ScrapStore is run by a dedicated team of volunteers who are passionate about crafting. The project provides valuable work experience and volunteer opportunities for people with a learning disability, enabling them to build a portfolio of skills with a view to finding work.
Kathy is supported by the GOLD (Getting On with Learning Difficulties) project run by East Kent Mencap and has volunteered at The ScrapStore since January 2022. She said: “I love coming to The ScrapStore and have really enjoyed working with the other volunteers on the refresh. It is great to be part of the team, I have learnt so much and made some lovely friends. We hope you come to The ScrapStore and see it for yourself.”
The reopening event raised £259.00 and every penny from The ScrapStore goes directly to supporting people with a learning disability to achieve what they want out of life.
The ScrapStore is located in Foresters Hall, Meeting Street, CT11 9RT, and is open every Wednesday and Thursday from 10am to 2pm.
