In a thank you speech at election of new Mayor Alderman Kempe, W.T.
Smith said he had been supported in office by his wife.

During his year;
1. Established a new health centre.

2. Pushed such schemes as; main drainage; road works; harbour street
lighting and various educational schemes.

Favoured the artificial beach scheme to cope with the increasing
numbers of visitors.

Captain William Thomas Smith, a former Mayor, and the 13th freeman
of Ramsgate, died in a local nursing home on Tuesday, aged 88 years.

Captain Smith, who formerly lived at 27 Park Road, Ramsgate was
elected to the Town Council in 1931, on his retirement as chief sanitary
inspector to Ramsgate Corporation.

He was later elected an alderman and became Mayor in 1937. When his
term of office as an alderman expired he was re-elected as a councillor
for West Cliff Ward. He was made a Freeman of the Borough on
September 26th, 1951, in recognition of his twenty years service on the
Council.
