Alderman Lazarus Hart

Years Elected: 1896, 1897

History:
Has been the oldest member of Ramsgate Town Council, active public
member associated with town affairs back to days of 'Old Improvement
Commissioners and the local board'.

1. When charter of Corporation was granted in 1884, Hart was
amongest 1st members of Town Council.

2. Was Mayor in 1896 and 1897 during time he declined to accept any
salary.

3. A bachelor and reputedly wealthy he was a director of the Isle of
Thanet (Margate) and Broadstairs gas Companies. Also had interest
in South Eastern and Chatham Railway and Midland Railway
Companies.

4. Owned good deal of property in Ramsgate and elsewhere.

5. Belonged to Margate, but came to Ramsgate to open a business in
Harbour Street, Ramsgate.

6. Elevated to Magisterial bench, by the other Magistrates signing a
petition to include Hart.

Died on Friday 7th September 1917 at home, 18 Albion Place,
Ramsgate, aged 86.

Funeral on Sunday 9th September at Jewish Cemetery.

Hart was a member of the Jewish Cemetery Committee during the
foundation of the Cemetery. Also left in his will provision for The
Havens of rest at Ramsgate (£10,000) for erection and maintenance.
