News / Ramsgate Town Council – Statement on Vandalism of Standing With Giants Installation
Ramsgate Town Council expresses its deep disappointment
following a number of incidents of vandalism to the Standing With Giants installation currently on display in the Royal Harbour.
The installation, which serves as a powerful tribute to the 338,000 personnel
rescued during Operation Dynamo, has been subject to damage affecting several
of the silhouettes. This includes one figure having its head removed, others
being bent or having elements such as hats and rifles forcibly broken off, and
further damage to limbs and structural components.
This behaviour is deeply disrespectful, not only to the
installation itself, but to the historic significance it represents and to
those who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Second World War. The
installation was designed to provide a place for reflection, remembrance, and
education, and it has been well received by residents and visitors alike.
All incidents have been reported to Kent Police. Local businesses are also
assisting by reviewing CCTV footage in an effort to identify those responsible.
Chair of the Council, Councillor Steve Albon said: “This is a deeply disappointing
act. The installation is a place of remembrance and respect, and this kind of
damage has no place in our community. The Council would like to thank
members of the public and local businesses who have already offered their
support and assistance. We urge anyone who may have information relating to
these incidents to contact Kent Police”.
Ramsgate Town Council remains committed to preserving and protecting this
important installation and will continue to work with partners to ensure it can
be respectfully maintained throughout its exhibition period.
