01 November 2024

Ramsgate Town Council has proudly granted the Honorary Freedom of the Town to Ramsgate RNLI, commemorating the organisation’s profound dedication to public safety and service. The award, confirmed during a Special Council Meeting on 25th September 2024, represents the council’s highest honour, paying tribute to the RNLI’s exceptional commitment to protecting Ramsgate’s waters and its community.

The evening was marked by the special presence of the newly installed Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, Admiral Sir George Zambellas, whose attendance underscored the significance of the award. The Lord Warden, as a guardian of the ancient ports and their maritime traditions, expressed admiration for Ramsgate RNLI’s extraordinary service to the region. His presence not only highlighted the honour but connected Ramsgate’s life-saving efforts to the broader legacy of maritime protection within the Cinque Ports.

For years, Ramsgate RNLI has been a pillar of courage, responding to emergencies day and night, regardless of the conditions, and has also been central to water safety education efforts, fostering a vigilant and responsible community.

Councillor Steve Albon, Chair of Ramsgate Town Council, presented the award and praised the RNLI team’s valour and commitment, remarking:
"The Ramsgate RNLI sums up the spirit of our country and embodies the highest ideals of bravery and dedication. Bestowing them with the Freedom of the Town is a testament to our enduring gratitude for their tireless service and the lives they’ve protected. Having the Lord Warden join us tonight amplifies this recognition and highlights the importance of their work to Ramsgate and beyond."

Coxswain of Ramsgate RNLI, Ian Cannon, said,I am delighted to accept this honour on behalf of the crew and all the many volunteers who support the Station. Although the RNLI is celebrating its 200th anniversary in 2024, our connection to the Town goes back further to 1802 when the first lifeboat station was built in Ramsgate. This deep connection is symbolised by the fact there is a Lifeboatman on the Town’s crest as well as a Coastguard. We are truly grateful to Ramsgate Town Council for this honour.

Later in the year there will be an event for Ramsgate Town Council to meet and thank the crew for their service.
