Key updates from the Council Meeting held on Wednesday 26th October 2022

  • Grants were awarded to the following organisations:

Beyond the Page were awarded £3,500 for an ESOL teacher to provide English lessons to women at The Corner, the women are a variety of nationalities and the majority are mothers and play a key role in the successful integration and education of their children; the additional confidence gained through the acquisition of language often results in further vocational skills training and/or regular employment.

Royal Temple Yacht Club were awarded £1,000 towards the purchase of Christmas lighting arrays for boats in the Harbour, including the RNLI and Heritage craft.

£7,962.94 was awarded to Arts in Ramsgate for a Ramsgate Winter Lantern Parade on the 22nd December 2022, including workshops in the weeks before the event. The Council noted that the workshops will also provide a “warm space” for people struggling in the current economic climate.

  • The town council is organising a decorative lighting display on the Harbour Arches.

  • CCTV is being installed at the Chilton Lane Allotment site, which is intended to address a number of anti-social activities that are detrimental to the safety and wellbeing of the plot holders.

  • The Council is going to write a “Collections Management Policy”, which will help focus and ensure the safe keeping of Ramsgate related records and artefacts.

  • The Town Council is not going to progress with a proposal to acquire Albion Gardens (including the Waterfall and Pulhamites) from Thanet District Council (TDC). The town council will approach TDC with the intention of mowing Albion Gardens and looking after Destiny (the War Memorial), but these can be undertaken without the Council owning the land.

  • TDC has approached Ramsgate Town Council with a proposal to transfer the East Cliff Lift. A meeting has been held with the lift engineer and architect previously used by TDC and a lot more information is required before the Council can make a decision on this matter, but this information will be sought and returned to the Council for consideration.

  • The Town Council is looking into the cost of planting trees on TDC land, this will help increase tree coverage without the town council having to acquire land. TDC is receptive to this idea, but it will need to be funded by the town council, and watering of the trees for three years will need to be arranged.

This is not a summary of everything covered at this meeting, please see the official Minutes for the legal record of the meeting. You can also watch the meeting itself on our YouTube channel. The above is intended to provide a snapshot of matters that may be of particular interest to residents.
