Ramsgate Proclamation Day for King Charles III

Home / About Ramsgate / News / Ramsgate Proclamation Day for King Charles III

11 September 2022

Ramsgate came together on 11th September 2022 following the passing of our late Sovereign, Queen Elizabeth II.

Our sadness at this time is shared by people across the globe, as we remember with affection and gratitude the lifetime of service given by our longest reigning Monarch.

The Proclamation reporting King Charles' accession to the throne was read out by Councillor Steve Albon, Chair of Ramsgate Town Council, at the flagpole on Wellington Crescent.

Afterwards the crowd joined the Chair in saying “God Save The King”, followed by three cheers.

The flag was returned to half mast, where it will remain until after The Queen’s funeral.

The Proclamation of the new Sovereign is a very old tradition which can be traced back over many centuries.

The ceremony does not create a new King. It is simply an announcement of the accession which took place immediately on the death of the reigning monarch.

Thank you to the Town Promoter, Rebekah Smith for filming this video.
