Key Updates from Ramsgate Town Council

Home / About Ramsgate / News / Key Updates from Ramsgate Town Council

16 May 2022

Here is a snapshot of some key recent decisions made by the Council. (Please note: The following is not an exhaustive list of recent resolutions):

  • The budget and precept for 2022/2023 was approved and there will be 0% change to the Council Tax (no increase/decrease for rate payers for the town council’s element of the rates bill).

  • A Climate Change Emergency was declared.

  • A new guidance document for the administration of the Ward Allowances was approved. Each of the 16 Councillors has an allowance of £600.00 per annum to be used on small, targeted projects that benefit their Ward, without having to seek approval of the Council/a Committee. Please contact your Ward Councillors (details on our website) if you’d like to find out more.

  • The following grants have been approved for activities and events in 2022/2023 (new applications can still be considered):

    • £20,000.00 was awarded to the Citizen’s Advice Bureau to continue to provide a part-time debt analyst throughout 2022/2023, on the understanding that the point of delivery must be in Ramsgate, to be accessible for residents.

    • £3,000.00 to Screaming Alley CIC to purchase theatre standard sound and lighting equipment.

    • £2,723.00 to Ramsgate Sea Cadets for the purchase of IT equipment to support a Rembrandt 6 Ship Manoeuvring Simulator and various tables and chairs.

    • £1,300.98 to Mooch for a temporary art installation on the public conveniences at Pier Yard.

    • £2,750.00 to the Miss Ramsgate Organisation for clothing for the Courts and refurbishment and decoration of the carnival float.

    • £20,000.00 was allocated for a Platinum Jubilee budget to support celebrations across all the Wards.

    • £3,000.00 to the Ramsgate Old Motor & Motorcycle Club for the event of The Great Bucket and Spade Run.

    • £3,000.00 to the Ramsgate Tunnels for an event during the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations.

    • £4,000.00 to the Ramsgate International Film and TV Festival for the event of the same name.

    • £2,500.00 to the Miss Ramsgate Organisation for the Selection Dance, Carnival Dance and ongoing events attended by Miss Ramsgate.

    • £1,500.00 to the Royal Temple Yacht Club for the event of Ramsgate Week.

    • £2,000.00 to the MDS Marine for the event of a two-day pop-up museum for the Rooswijk ship remains to be on public display.

    • £3,000.00 to the Ramsgate Carnival for the event of the same name.

    • £750.00 to the Ramsgate Bowls Club for the event of the Ramsgate Bowls Club Tournament.

    • £2,000.00 to the Extra Normal Records for the event of Contra Pop.

    • £2,000.00 to the Friends of Ellington Park for the event of Opera in the Park.

  • The Council continues with its good governance of The Custom House, where we hold a full repairing lease, with various repairs and maintenance work being undertaken and a quinquennial condition survey by a suitably qualified architect arranged. This will ensure that any little problems don’t become large, costly problems.

  • The Council has approved the brief for a Project Manager who will be appointed to manage the next steps of the project to refurbish and redevelop the Grade II listed Radford House (the Old Fire Station on Effingham Street) into a community centre, providing access to activities and services not currently available in central Ramsgate, whilst also restoring and protecting the physical fabric of this historic building.

  • The Council resolved to respond to Thanet District Council’s “Thanet Outdoor Market Operator Services – Public Information Notice”. This was a soft market testing exercise in which TDC were asking for expressions of interest from potential managers interested in running a monthly market in Ramsgate. The Town Council is very keen to see a weekly market return to Ramsgate, and our expression of interest states that the town council would like to manage a weekly market in the town centre, and a monthly market (which could be for speciality markets, for example) at a different location (near the town centre).

  • Various activities relating to the Platinum Jubilee were considered, and the following was resolved:

    • The Council will take part in the ‘The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacons’ event on Thursday 2nd June 2022; it is intended that there will be beacons at the East Cliff, Harbour and West Cliff. Details about this event will be published nearer the time.

    • The Council seeks to acquire a plot of land in or adjacent to Ramsgate’s boundaries, in order to establish a “Jubilee Wood”. Such a woodland would be an eternal reminder of Her Majesty’s service to the country, play a vital role in combating climate change, protect the land from development and provide an area for leisure, relaxation and environmentally friendly activities.

    • £500.00 funding has been put aside to support Jubilee events in each Ward such as street parties.

    • A budget for Jubilee events in the town centre and Harbour has been agreed, details to be established.

This is not a summary of every decision. Please see the official Minutes for the legal record of our meetings - and you can also watch the entire discussion on our YouTube Channel.
