Key Updates from Ramsgate Town Council

Home / About Ramsgate / News / Key Updates from Ramsgate Town Council

26 March 2022

Extraordinary Council Meeting
  • A grant of £1,000 to POW! Thanet was approved, to help fund a “Reclaim & Reconnect – Ramsgate Day” on the 5th March 2022.
  • A grant of £2,000 to Ramsgate Festival of Sound CIC was approved, to support a “Ramsgate Through the Senses” event that will take place over three days in March 2022.
  • There are 14 Clifftop Shelters that are currently leased by Thanet District Council (TDC) to the Ramsgate Society, who have maintained these shelters for over a decade. Ramsgate Town Council is going to ascertain if TDC would be receptive to transferring these assets to the Town Council once the current lease expires in 2023. It is still proposed that the Ramsgate Society will take responsibility for their upkeep. (NB. It is by no means finalised that the Town Council will take on ownership of these shelters, but the idea is being explored).

Planning and Infrastructure Committee
  • The Committee received a document supplied by local resident Mr Peter Borough and resolved to accept his offer to provide assistance to the Council in developing an overarching outline plan for the highway and pathway network of the town, on an unpaid, voluntary and non-political basis.
  • The Committee considered its response to the TDC Future High Streets Fund: Highway and Pedestrian Movement Scheme. Ramsgate Town Council resolved to welcome and support the proposed measures, but raised concerns in relation to the route for large vehicles and HGVs when the road tunnel is closed, and also recommended that the scheme is monitored to check on its success.

Town Promotion Committee
  • Every Ramsgate resident will now receive a copy of the Community Ad Magazine, starting from May 2022. This will be trialled for one year.
  • A grant of £1,000.00 was approved from the Ramsgate Fund to the Royal Temple Yacht Club for the purchase of Christmas lights for the boat owners.
  • Contracts were renewed for Whelband Communications (Active Ramsgate PR), Tribal Voice Communications (Active Ramsgate Tourism Consultant) and Your Heritage Ltd (Useeum App), who are commissioned to promote Ramsgate as a visitor destination.

Planning and Infrastructure Committee
  • The Committee considered the Council’s response to Thanet District Council’s “Ramsgate Conservation Area” public consultation. Ramsgate Town Council welcomes the very thorough report. Concerns were raised about delivery due to understaffing at Thanet District Council. Ramsgate Town Council would like to be part of the implementation, particularly Councillors whose wards are within the Conservation Area along with local volunteers which Ramsgate Town Council can assist in organising.
  • The Committee received the updated Highways Improvement Plan (HIP) and a report from Miss L Fidler, Town Clerk, with various recommendations for consideration. Various amendments were made to the document (please see the draft minutes on the website). A Working Group will be formed to look at the resident requests as detailed in the report before inclusion in the document. The Working Group will also consider which roads should be included in a 20mph zone. Mr Borough will be asked to look at signage in the town centre generally, considering potential better placement of signage. Mr Borough will report back on his work, and with the initial proposal for the 20mph zone and then a subsequent committee meeting will consider what the HIP priority for 2022/2023 should be.
  • The committee considered the response from Southern Water in relation to wastewater releases affecting Thanet. A further letter to be sent to Southern Water and placed on the Ramsgate Town Council website, advising that their reply is considered to be extremely inefficient and unsatisfactory and to raise concerns about the provision of water supply to new builds in Ramsgate. Craig Mackinlay MP to be copied in.
