September is often referred to as ‘Back to School’ month and frankly, let’s hope it is after the last 18 months. Children and young students will be returning to school after their summer holidays, but have no fear as we have plenty to look forward to over the coming weekends in September!
The Festival of Sound starts on the August Bank Holiday and continues to spread their love of all things sonic throughout the first week of September, finishing on Sunday 5, featuring The Sonic Trail dotted around the town, ‘Busk at Dusk’ along the beautiful Winterstoke Chine and their star attraction this year is none other than Mercury Award nominee, Nadine Shah.
Next up, on Saturday September 11, we have the amazing, acrobatic, all-woman troupe, Circo Rum Ba Ba performing one of their popular shows in Charlotte Court (there will be 2 performances, late morning and mid afternoon).
Ramsgate’s Carnival will be on Sunday September 12, offering a fun-packed day with funfair, stalls and of course all the colourful carnival floats that take you back to that traditional seaside experience many of us remember from our youth!
The Heritage Open Days will also be happening this year from September 10 to 19, which you can find out more about on
Ramsgate Society’s Facebook page.
The extra special listing for 2021 is the Royal Harbour 200 event. Taking place from September 24 to 26, celebrating the 200th anniversary of when King George IV granted Royal Status to our harbour. The event, organised by Ralph Hoult and his small team of volunteers, will be packed with maritime and historical features, listed throughout this copy of Community Ad which really will include ‘something for everyone’!
During the 5 years of event planning, Dominic Grant, resident sculptor, approached Ralph about creating a larger-than-life statue of King George IV and his dream was to unveil his masterpiece at the event but tragically, we lost our dear friend Dominic in November 2020 after a very short illness. In his memory and to realise his legacy, we will be relying on this event to fundraise for the bronze- casting of the sculpture, ready for its unveiling in 2022. Like King George, Dominic loved art and our harbour and we see this incredible sculpture as a symbol of those combined loves and hope that it will inspire others to follow their creative dreams. Dominic was a self taught artist and worked tirelessly on this statue from Arch 20, enjoying the harbour view as he worked and he always imagined his statue would be overlooking the harbour for people to enjoy for many years to come. We want to make this happen and we hope the Ramsgate community will help us raise the final amount to see King George bronze-cast and installed in his rightful place.
We hope to see a bustling harbour full of people enjoying this once in a century event! All we need is the weather to behave in September.
