Ramsgate Town Council Approves Six-Month Security Initiative for Town Centre

Ramsgate Town Council has approved a new six-month initiative to enhance safety and public reassurance in the town centre, appointing Probe Security to supply two dedicated Security Officers operating eight hours a day, seven days a week.

The decision comes in response to ongoing concerns about anti-social behaviour, business vulnerability, and public confidence in the town centre. The Security Officers will undertake a wide range of duties designed to improve safety, support local businesses, and contribute to a cleaner and more welcoming environment.

Under the agreement, the Security Officers will:

• Provide high-visibility patrols to deter crime, anti-social behaviour, theft, vandalism, and street drinking.
• Work in close partnership with Kent Police, council enforcement teams, and local organisations, and assist with joint operations relating to shoplifting, begging, and the night-time economy.
• Act as a first point of contact for businesses and residents, offering advice, sharing intelligence on crime trends, and helping coordinate existing schemes such as Thanet Safe.
• Offer public reassurance and assistance, including giving directions, supporting tourists, and providing first aid where required.
• Record and report incidents, supplying statements or evidence when necessary.
• Help maintain a pleasant environment by reporting issues such as graffiti, fly-tipping, damaged street furniture, and monitoring anti-social behaviour hotspots.
• Support the night-time economy by assisting licensed premises, providing conflict de-escalation, and helping vulnerable individuals.
• Utilise, where lawful and appropriate, the limited powers of citizen’s arrest under Section 24A of PACE 1984, when a police officer is not immediately available.

This six-month security deployment is a practical step towards tackling anti-social behaviour and giving confidence back to residents and businesses. By working closely with the police, local traders, and community groups, these officers will help make a real difference on the ground.”

Probe Security, already well-established, began patrols 1 December 2025. The initiative will be reviewed at the end of the six-month period, enabling the Council to assess the impact and determine future arrangements.
