News / Ramsgate Town Council Calls for Urgent Police Action to Enforce New PSPO Amid Rising Antisocial Behaviour
Ramsgate Town Council is urging Kent Police to take swift and decisive action to implement the newly approved Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) introduced by Thanet District Council, amid escalating incidents of antisocial behaviour in the town centre and surrounding areas.
In a letter addressed to Chief Inspector Swallow, Ramsgate Town Council Chair, Councillor Steve Albon expressed grave concern over a “persistent pattern” of public disorder, including drinking, vandalism, intimidation, and violent incidents, which are affecting residents, businesses, and visitors.
“The situation on our streets has become intolerable,” said Councillor Albon, “We now need a visible and coordinated police response to enforce the new PSPO and restore public confidence.”
Recent reports cited in the Council's correspondence include violent confrontations, intoxicated gatherings, public urination and defecation, and disturbances involving both adults and minors across key areas such as Charlotte Court, York Street, Albion Gardens, and near Lloyds Bank.
“These are not isolated incidents but part of a deeply concerning trend,” the letter states, “The PSPO provides an essential framework to curb this behaviour—but only if robustly enforced.”
Ramsgate Town Council has offered to meet with police representatives to support efforts in restoring safety and order across public spaces.
