A Postcard to Mexico

Home / About Ramsgate / News / A Postcard to Mexico

19 August 2025

This postcard is an interesting view of Royal Parade when the road was known as the new road. The postcard was printed and published by Leon & Levy who were French postcard publishers based in Paris. The distinctive Leon & Levy trademark LL can be seen on the front of the postcard.

Postmarked September 11, 1907, the postcard was sent to an address in Mexico via New York. There are three other postmarks that suggest the postcard arrived in Mexico on September 26, 1907, something I find remarkable as there was no such thing as air mail in 1907.

The detail of the postcard is equally interesting, showing Royal Parade as it originally was along with the Westcliff Arcade, and the buildings to the right that are no longer with us. The harbour looks busy and there is a tram on the Royal Parade.

The sender, whose name is Nelly, writes that Ramsgate is a lovely place and she and baby Bess are getting a nice colour. Nelly sends her love.
