The Probus Club of Ramsgate and District celebrates its 50th Anniversary on March 5, with a special lunch at the San Clu Hotel.
Together with regular members, a number of guests from other nearby PROBUS clubs have been invited, and the Mayor of Ramsgate and Town Sergeant will be attending. A commemorative anniversary booklet has been prepared to coincide with this event. Included in the booklet is a group photo taken last year and lots of interesting information about the history of the Club. A copy will be given to every member.
The Probus Club movement was formed in the United Kingdom in 1965. A Probus club is a local association of retired and semi-retired professional and businesspeople. Probus is not a “senior citizen” or “lonely hearts” club. The name is an amalgamation of the abbreviation of the words professional and business. Probus is also a Latin word meaning honest or virtuous, from which the English word “probity” is derived. Each Probus club is autonomous. There is no central organisation, and each club sets its own rules. Today there are an estimated 1,700 Probus Clubs in the UK, of which the Probus Club of Ramsgate and District is one that began back in 1975.
New members are very welcome. Currently we meet every first Wednesday of the month at the San Clu Hotel for lunch, followed by informative and entertaining guest speakers. On the third Wednesday there is a coffee morning which features members talking about their lives, careers, hobbies, etc. We also have various social functions throughout the year such as quiz nights, holidays, dinners and special functions that include partners.
If you would be interested in finding out more about the club, please contact: Brent Rimmington (Secretary) on 01843 589192.
