News / Remembrance Day Services 2024
Remembrance Sunday is a time to reflect and remember the service and sacrifice of everyone who fought for our freedom. We use this opportunity to remember many people, including, those in the Armed Forces and their families, emergency service workers and those who lost their lives as a result of conflicts.
Great Britain has commemorated this memorial day since the end of the First World War to honour and remember our service men and women who have died in the line of duty.
How will Ramsgate commemorate Remembrance this year?
Remembrance Sunday – November 10, 2024
On Sunday November 10, 2024, Ramsgate town will have their annual parade which will start in the town centre, and end at St. George’s Church. The parade includes serving members and veterans from service organisations including The Royal British Legion, The Royal Naval Association, and The Royal Air Force. Cadet and youth organisations are also invited to take part in the Parade.
Once the parade reaches St. George’s Church, there will be a wreath laying ceremony at the cenotaph in the church grounds, followed by a longer church service inside.
Armistice Day – Monday November 11, 2024
On Monday November 11, 2024, there will be a number of services to commemorate Armistice Day. Starting at 9am with a wreath laying ceremony in Albion Gardens in front of the ‘Destiny’ memorial statue. The ‘Destiny’ memorial statue was unveiled to commemorate those who had contributed to the First World War, including the contribution of animals.
After the early morning service in Albion Gardens, there will be two ceremonies at 11am to observe the two-minute silence.
“At the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month – we will remember them.”
In Ramsgate town centre, there will be a short service that will start just before 11am. We encourage members of the public to join this service.
At 11am, there will also be a wreath laying ceremony at Ramsgate Cemetery. This service is traditionally attended by service members and veterans.
The Poppy
The red poppy is an enduring symbol of remembrance of the First World War.
Poppies are worn nationwide as a sign of support for the Armed Forces, veterans and their families. The charitable organisation ‘The Poppy Appeal’ raises money to help the Armed Forces community.
In Ramsgate, thousands of knitted and crocheted poppies go on display in various locations across the town. They are crafted by members of the town’s ‘Crafty Poppies’ group. They make a great addition to the town during Remembrance.
