27 April 2024

Some of us do suffer from anxiety about the situation with our climate as we see unpredictable weather, natural disasters and headlines full of gloom about the future. This article from Triodos Bank highlights the top five actions people are taking to feel less anxious about the climate crisis – so if you’re affected in this way, do try one or more of these.
  1. Spending time outdoors / in nature
Numerous studies have shown that connecting with nature is good for wellbeing. You could try gardening or visit a local nature reserve. You can even take part in a treescapes study, if you’re walking in a National Forest.

  2. Reading positive news stories
News outlets like Positive News (www.positive.news) report uplifting stories of real progress against the challenges of our time and the good work that individuals, communities and organisations are doing.?

  3. Making changes to your lifestyle to be more environmentally friendly
Collective action is powerful and 75% of people in the UK say they have taken action to reduce their environmental impact, most commonly by using less single-use plastic, changing their diet by eating less meat, and switching to a renewable energy supplier. Friends of the Earth has some top tips for being a conscious consumer – www.friendsoftheearth.uk/climate/live-sustainably-how-be-conscious-consumer.

  4. Learning more about how to be more environmentally friendly
There’s a great range of books, podcasts and videos that can offer thought-provoking views on the climate crisis. How Bad Are Bananas? by Mike Berners-Lee looks at the balance between individual action and systemic change, while Tori Tsui’s book It’s Not Just You focuses on the intersection between mental health and the climate.

Ramsgate Town Council has been lent a collection of books on sustainability which are available for residents to consult. We’ll publish full details in our next magazine, but meanwhile if you’re interested please contact us on info@ramsgatetown.org.

  5. Taking a break from reading the news
Switching off doesn’t mean disengaging. Fair fashion campaigner Venetia La Manna attempts to do an #offline48 detox from social media each weekend to reconnect with the people around her.
