News / Historic Landmark Restored as Part of Ramsgate’s Regeneration
A significant restoration project has recently been completed in Ramsgate, revitalising a key section of the historic Georgian terrace at Albion Place. The development brings a landmark building back into residential use and contributes to the broader regeneration of the town’s iconic seafront.
This part of Albion Place, which includes the Grade II listed Victoria House and adjacent Dundee House, has undergone extensive restoration and conversion. Now providing 24 one- to three-bedroom homes, the scheme has reinstated the original charm and character of the terrace, while delivering high-quality modern living spaces that reflect the area’s rich architectural heritage.
Originally developed in the late 18th century, Albion Place was conceived as an L-shaped Georgian terrace surrounding a communal garden. Much of this was lost or altered following wartime damage and subsequent mid-20th-century redevelopment. This restoration has carefully reinstated original street features, including timber sash windows, period-style balconies, and individual front entrances, in a way that reflects the historic integrity of the site.
The newly completed homes feature high ceilings, large windows, and restored period detailing throughout, blending heritage character with contemporary standards of comfort and efficiency. Some homes benefit from panoramic sea views and vistas across Ramsgate’s Royal Harbour.
Work is already underway on the final phase of the wider project, which will see 13 additional homes constructed on a nearby car park — a space once occupied by Georgian homes prior to WWII. This will help to restore the symmetry of the terrace and further enhance the townscape.
The restored residences are now available for sale and rent, offering a mix of housing options for local residents and newcomers alike. Located within walking distance of Ramsgate Mainline Station, the homes provide convenient links for those commuting to London or elsewhere.
The scheme contributes to ongoing regeneration efforts across Ramsgate by preserving part of the town’s maritime and architectural heritage while supporting housing needs. It is also set to feature in Thanet District Council’s upcoming heritage guidance for restoring historic buildings, offering an example of how sensitive redevelopment can preserve historic character while delivering modern homes.
This project supports the ongoing aim to respect and revitalise the town’s unique heritage, ensuring that Ramsgate’s built environment continues to serve its community now and into the future.
