History:
Died in a Ramsgate nursing home on Sunday 18th May 1958, aged 67.

As Chairman of the Parks and Pleasure grounds Committee he made his
mark.

Known as a very hard worker, he liked to travel around Southern
England.

In 1929 he moved to Ramsgate to take on a Butcher's Shop in Bellevue
Road.

In 1938 he won the seat for East Cliff Ward, thus entering the council.

He worked hard for the town especially during the war years, and was
elevated to the aldermanic bench as a reward.

Twice Mayor, but had to retire from public life in October 1954 because
of ill health.

In his capacity as Chairman of the Parks and Pleasure grounds
Committee, he established numerous sporting activities, including the
very successful hockey tournaments.

One time treasurer of Ramsgate Sports week, and assistant treasurer
of Ramsgate Athletic Club.

Member of Ramsgate Cycling and Motoring Club.

Rev. Harcourt Samuel said of Hughes,
"He was outspoken but wise"

Left a widow and one son.
