is a well-established organisation which offers a diverse range of support to parents with young children. We have provided a unique outreach service throughout Thanet for over 32 years, recruiting and training volunteers, who are usually parents themselves, to visit families.
Our committed and caring volunteer Mentors offer emotional and practical support through weekly visits to the families’ home. Their friendly, non-judgemental approach enables parents to make positive changes, improving the quality of life and outcomes for themselves and their children.
Home-Start Thanet is rooted in and serves the local community. To us every family is special and by providing individual support to parents we enable them to grow in confidence, to strengthen their relationships with their children and widen their links with the local community. We believe that parents play the key role in ensuring that children have a happy and secure childhood, but even the most dedicated parents can face challenges at times and that is where the regular support of a volunteer Mentor really helps.
We have been fortunate to receive funding from The National Lottery, and our Embrace Programme ensures we deliver focused interventions to parents needing psychological support with issues such as depression, anxiety and stress. We offer both a home visiting service (where COVID-19 restrictions allow) plus counselling. Our Butterfly Programme, funded by Children-in–Need, focuses on support for child and provides support for challenging behaviours, children awaiting diagnosis for Spectrum disorders and also supports children with life transitions or past trauma. Funding from Kent Community Foundation has now allowed us to launch The New Start Programme, which specifically supports families impacted by domestic abuse or dysfunctional controlling relationships, and the psychological trauma and practical fall out impacting on family life.
We have continued and will continue to offer support to families throughout the Coronavirus restrictions, adapting to telephone or virtual support when face-to-face meetings are not recommended.
We are looking for people of all ages who are parents themselves or have parenting experience to volunteer either as a home visiting Mentor or as a Trustee. We provide training for our potential volunteers which takes place over five days, during school time, allowing anyone with school-aged children the opportunity to attend.
Once you have completed the short induction course you will be introduced to a local family to offer them weekly support. You will need to be able to commit between two to four hours per week, which is flexible to meet the demands of your own family.
