/ 200th Anniversary of the UK's only Royal Harbour
In 1996, we celebrated the 175th anniversary of the naming of our "Royal Harbour of Ramsgate", an event that occurred back in 1821, following the Monarch’s first visit on September 25 of that year. On this occasion HM King George IV got such a rousing reception from the people of Ramsgate, that he returned to the town on November 8 and on November 27 to name it "Royal", giving us the right to raise his Royal Standard over Ramsgate's Royal Harbour three times a year.
We fly the Royal Standard of the King in commemoration of his accession to the throne, on January 29; his Coronation, on July 19 and for his birthday, on August 12.
On September 25, 1996, a group of Ramsgate residents, dressed in the style of clothes appropriate for the year 1821, crossed the Channel with a banquet on board. On the return journey, I read out a letter from HM the Queen to celebrate the 175th anniversary.
In 2021, we plan to hold the Royal Harbour 200th Anniversary Festival over the weekend of September 24 and 25. This event will, I hope, include a Royal visitor on the Saturday to unveil a new Bronze Statue of HM King George IV on the Royal Harbour. This will let the world know what an amazing place Ramsgate and its Royal Harbour is.
We have already been working on this major event with planning, fundraising and getting a great team together to stage what could be the biggest event in Ramsgate for 50 years, including possibly two Royal Navy ships. We have already got 19 different community groups on board to make the event happen and we have secured some of the required funding.
This event, like the original one in 1821, includes the people of Ramsgate and Royalty. If you want to be part of the history in the making, then please get in touch and join our special team.
