/ Ramsgate Heritage Action Zone
In March 2017, Ramsgate was selected as one of the first ten Heritage Action Zones in England. A new initiative from Historic England, Heritage Action Zones will breathe new life into old places rich in heritage and full of promise - unlocking their potential and making them more attractive to residents, businesses, tourists and investors.
The scheme is run in partnership with Thanet District Council and Ramsgate Coastal Community Team (currently comprising Ramsgate Town Council, The Ramsgate Society, Ramsgate Neighbourhood Planning Forum, Ramsgate Town Team and the Ramsgate Regeneration Alliance).
The five year project will:
- Review Ramsgate’s historic environment to understand the significance of Ramsgate’s heritage.
- Increase local engagement with the historic environment.
- Stimulate heritage-related tourism.
- Deliver training and heritage skills development.
- Act as an example of best-practice in heritage asset management, bringing historic buildings back into use.
Louisa Hrabowy was appointed as Programme Manager in July 2017, funded by Historic England, and is coordinating the programme of activities.
Since then progress has been swift. Historic England has started four research projects to increase understanding of the town’s rich local heritage. They include a new book, a GIS map documenting the local historic character, investigating aerial photographs and researching the area’s prehistory.
Last December, the partnership hosted a stakeholder event to explore new and exciting partnership opportunities and this year there will be a series of community engagement events.
